Location
Christian International Caribbean's Mission is located in
Baitoa de Santiago, an impoverished region in the foothills of
the Central Corridor Mountains, where Pico Duarte, at 3175 mt
is the highest mountain peak in the Caribbean. 45 minutes due
south of Santiago, the village sits admidst Rugged hills,
mountain ridges, lush green valleys, white water rivers, and
deep blue lakes.
Horse
& riders, and cattle drives are a common sight on the
streets of Baitoa. Except for a few small farms that raise
yuca, corn, and plátano (green banana), raising cattle is the
main business here in the country. Sharp barbed wire stands on
fences that surround the homes in town. It's designed to keep
the cattle out.... not to keep something in!
The Dominican people are a warm, open, and friendly. With a
quick smile, the greeting "Comó esta usted" rings
out as you walk the streets in the early morning hours. The
smell of Dominican Café tempts your senses. The town is
fairly laid back, and the locals still celebrate
"siesta", a two hour break from 12 noon to 2 PM,
where they nap after having the main meal of the day.
